Email changes work to keep us all connecting

On Jan. 29 all Virginia Tech Gmail users saw a change in their log in processes that made G Suite apps more secure.

Why, you may ask?

It's a simple fact of life that passwords are no longer enough -- a compromised email account puts you at risk and hurts the university as a whole.

Change isn't easy, and it isn't something we undertake lightly. But when hacks can result in blocks to both incoming and outgoing email that affect everyone @vt.edu, we have to take action.

These threats aren't theoretical and they cause real damage, not just aggravation. When logging in, adding a second confirmation of your identity is the best way to keep cybercriminals from achieving their objectives.

The changes mean that instead of using a separate password that is only for Google services, you will use your PID (now called a VT Username). If you forgot your password, or it has expired, you will need to choose a new passphrase. 4Help is ready to assist you with any questions you may have related to your Virginia Tech accounts.

For an easier (AND more secure) experience, here's a few tips:

  • If you know you need a new password, and you haven't set up any self-service options to reset it (like a text or phone call), visit 4help.vt.edu and choose the 'Ask as a Guest' option to request a reset.

  • While you're at it, set up some self-service passphrase reset options – 4Help can assist with that too.

  • Make 2-Factor Authentication a part of your digital routine - check the 'Remember me for 7 days' option; and find the authentication methods that are easiest for you. We recommend the Duo Mobile smartphone app, but you can also use printed codes, tokens, voice or SMS text options as your primary means or as a backup method. Even without cell service or Wi-Fi, the Duo Mobile app can be used to generate passcodes.

  • Remember that 4Help is there 24/7 online at 4Help.vt.edu, or by phone at (540) 231-4357. We also have walk-in locations on campus in Blacksburg.

The increased security and streamlined experience with accounts and passwords will provide valuable long-term benefits not only to Virginia Tech, but to all who are a part of the Hokie Nation. Thank you for continuing to be part of that solution!
