Chapter Cheers: Hokie Parents – Surviving the College Admissions Process Together

Join our panel of Hokie parents who will discuss their experience with the admissions process. They’ll be on hand to answer your questions and provide helpful advice. The panel includes:

• Whitney Owens ‘93,  Fayetteville, NC, member of the Parent Council. After working in retail management for six years and retail banking for four years, Owens stayed at home with her two daughters who are current Virginia Tech students. She has served various volunteer capacities from Junior League president to Sunday school teacher to PTA president (twice) to Peninsula Fine Arts Board member to Virginia Tech Parent Council Member. 
• Juli and Steve Murden, Roanoke, VA, members of the Parent Council. The Murdens joined the Parent Council in 2018.  Their older son, Christopher, graduated in 2020. He enjoyed serving on the Student Conduct Committee and being a member of German Club.  Their younger son, Brooks ‘25, is also a member of German Club. The Murdens are enthusiastic supporters of all things Virginia Tech.
• Julie Smart Koob ’92, Chester, VA, president of the Tri-Cities Alumni Chapter. Koob is a second generation Hokie and Hokie mom. She is the proud creator of three Hokie license plates and has an intense group text with seven other Hokies she met in 1988 when they all lived in the same quad. Koob said the hardest thing about being a Hokie alum AND parent, is allowing you child to have their own Hokie experience, and not want them to do everything you did.

Our online talk will be a chance for participants to hear about real-world experience from parents of students who are currently on campus . They will share their thoughts on how the process works and offer helpful advice.
