Senior Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations

Matt joined Virginia Tech's Advancement Division in November 2015 as senior associate vice president for alumni relations, and he is a member of the division's senior leadership team.

He previously served as assistant to the president at the University of Georgia, providing counsel to university leadership in many critical areas, including community and alumni relations, intercollegiate athletics student life, institutional diversity, institutional advancement, and campus safety.

A second-generation Virginia Tech alumnus, Winston began his professional career in his alma mater’s University Relations division, before joining the University of Georgia, initially as news bureau manager. His tenure at Georgia also included serving as acting director of the university’s Office of Institutional Diversity.

His extensive history of involvement with Virginia Tech has included serving as president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, as president of the alumni chapter in the Athens, Georgia, as a member of the Black Cultural Center Alumni Advisory Board, and as a member of the Virginia Tech Foundation Board of Directors.

Winston, a native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, earned a bachelor’s in marketing management from Virginia Tech in 1990.
