Ray Smoot
Raymond “Ray” Smoot graduated in 1969 with a B.A. and M.S. from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. Additionally, he earned a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1976. Smoot is former vice president for administration and treasurer at Virginia Tech and former chief executive officer of the Virginia Tech Foundation. He was conferred the title vice president for administration and treasurer emeritus at Virginia Tech in 2018. During the nearly five decades he spent with Virginia Tech — only briefly interrupted to pursue his Ph.D. at The Ohio State University — Smoot served the university in many roles, including managing the university’s real estate and property acquisitions, insurance, athletics department, investment management and venture capital programs, and establishing and leading several corporations. He currently serves on the Hotel Roanoke LLC Board and the Commonwealth Transportation Board. Additionally, he is a founding and continuing member of the Via College of Osteopathic Medicine Board of Directors, and is chair of the Investment Committee of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. Previously, Smoot was chair of the Corporate Research Center Board of Directors, a member of Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Alumni Board, and the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund Executive Committee. He received the Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 2019.
