Tom Winborne

Tom Winborne is a 1975 graduate of Virginia Tech with a bachelor's degree in architecture. Upon graduation, Winborne went to work for Clark Nexsen Inc., architects and engineers where he had worked in an off-campus program during his fourth year at Virginia Tech.

Winborne continued to work at Clark Nexsen for 44 years, retiring in 2017 having served as an architect, project manager, architecture department head, chief operations officer, CEO, and chairman emeritus of the Board of Directors.

In 1975, Clark Nexsen had 24 employees in two offices. In 2017 they had 500 employees in 11 offices in Virginia, North Carolina, D.C., Texas, and Georgia. In 1980 Winborne and his wife moved to Madrid, Spain, to assist in opening a new office there. He lived and practiced there for four years and continued designing and managing projects in Europe and Asia for over 30 years, including projects in Spain, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Jordan, Iceland, United Kingdom, Bahrain, Ascension Island, and Antigua.

Winborne is a licensed architect in five states, member of the American Institute of Architects, Construction Specifications Institute, the Design Build Institute, and is a USGBC LEED AP. He is especially proud of the six projects Clark Nexsen designed on the Virginia Tech Campus.

He also served on the boards of Monarch Bank, the Branch Museum of Architecture and Design, and the American Heart Association, and currently serves on the Old Dominion University Education Foundation Board, the Virginia Tech Alumni Association Board, and Towne Bank Chesapeake Board. Winborne was a planning commissioner for the City of Chesapeake for four years. He designed, constructed, and helps manage the St. Stephens Food Pantry at Portlock United Methodist Church. Winborne is married to his wife Nancy and has two daughters and three grandchildren.
